Interview with Mie Firring - the designer behind Spektakelstrik
JUNE 2025
We’re excited to spotlight a special collaboration with Danish designer Mie Firring, who has made Spektakelstrik a go-to name for trend-driven knitwear.
With her modern, fashion-forward patterns, Mie brings a fresh perspective to the world of handknits.
To celebrate the release of her latest design—the Nori Sweater, made with our yarns—we reached out to ask her a few questions. We hope this interview offers a glimpse into her creative world and her signature contemporary style.

Could you begin by introducing yourself and sharing how you got into knitting and started creating your own designs?
"My name is Mie, and I’m the designer behind Spektakelstrik. I have a background as a graphic designer and art director, and creativity has always been a big part of my life.
I first really got into knitting when I was expecting my son Otto, 13 years ago, and I haven’t put down the needles since. I did knit as a child, but it never quite stuck with me back then.
Knitting started out as a hobby and a welcome break from screen work, but I quickly realized I could combine my graphic design skills with knitwear design to create something truly personal.
In 2016, I began turning this passion into a business. At first, I started sharing my designs almost by chance, but the positive feedback rolled in, and before I knew it, Spektakelstrik had grown into a full-time job."

We find that your knitwear designs are modern and fashion-forward. How do you stay up to date with current trends, and how do you incorporate them into your work?
"I naturally keep an eye on the fashion scene, both internationally and locally, but I also find inspiration in graphic trends, color combinations, and materials from other fields, like interior design and art.
I don’t necessarily try to chase trends, but I have a clear sense of what’s happening, and I let that flow into my designs in a way that still feels true to me."

What kinds of designs and key elements can we look forward to in your upcoming collections for the coming seasons and next year? Are there any fashion trends you're particularly excited about?
"Right now, I’m working a lot with textures - creating depth and playfulness through stitch patterns and structure. It’s going to be bold, with tweed and a more bombastic feel.
We’ll be wrapping ourselves up for autumn, and you can expect lots of color play and intricate cables in my upcoming designs.
I’ve also fallen in love with turquoise
and honey yellow, so you can definitely expect some striking color pops as well."

As a successful knitwear designer, what advice would you give to aspiring knitwear designers who are trying to build a career in this field?
"Find your own voice and style! It’s important not just to copy trends, but to develop something that feels authentic to you.
And be patient - it takes time to build a brand and a customer base. Share your process, be open on social media, and make connections within the knitting and design community.
It’s also a good idea to learn a bit about the business side - creativity is one thing, but it has to work together with finances and marketing. "

Outside of your designer work, what activities or interests do you enjoy?
"I still love everything related to visual culture: art, design, architecture. I enjoy being out in nature, going for walks, and I’m passionate about moving through dance or pilates — it helps me step out of my head so not everything is about work.
And spending time with my husband and kids fills me with love and keeps me grounded in what really matters."
It’s been a real pleasure to speak with Mie and learn more about her journey, inspirations, and approach to knitwear design. We hope this conversation has given you new insight into her creative process—and perhaps sparked a little inspiration for your own knitting projects too.
